Lemony Avocado Toast with Pepper Flakes

This Avocado Toast recipe is lemony, buttery and spicy, the perfect way to start the day.

Avocado Toast is the dish that propelled Australian breakfast cuisine to international stardom. It also came to immortalize millennial spending habits. Not bad for such a simple meal.

Bill Granger of Sydney cafe Bills is credited with the invention of avocado toast, or at least for spawning its popularity.

There are no end of options on how to make avocado toast. For me the key is mix the buttery texture of the avocado with at least one citric element and some heat. In this recipe those roles are played by fresh lemon juice and red pepper flakes.

You may need to adapt the amount of lemon juice to the size of the avocado, and the red pepper flakes to your preference for heat.

  • 1 avocado
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1/2 tablespoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 slice of thick bread

1. Smash the avocado with a fork in a bowl with the lemon juice until it’s spreadable but still slightly chunky.

2. Toast the bread.

3. Spread the avocado on the bread and sprinkle with red pepper flakes. Enjoy!
